A straightforward guide to the different types of blinds.
In general, Roller, Pleated, Vertical and Panel blinds use similar fabrics in different ways, while Venetian Blinds use different materials in the same way.
Roller blinds Offer stylish simplicity and have the largest fabric range in terms of colours, designs and performance. Designs include plains, patterned, translucent, textured weaves and suede. Performance fabrics incorporate blackout blinds for bedrooms, mildew inhibitors for shower and bathrooms, flame retardants and coatings to reflect or retain heat. Personal touches can be added with shaped bottoms, poles, braids and designer pulls.
Pleated Blinds Suitable for most areas. The fabric is manufactured in a concertina (zig-zag) fashion which is raised to open. Particularly suitable in conservatories as they can be shaped to match the glass roof panels. Also useful in PVC window systems that avoid the need to drill into the frame.
Vertical Blinds Generally for larger windows including french windows and especially useful in bay windows as the track can be shaped to match the curve of the bay. The fabric is hung from the top in strips (louvres). Side controls rotate the louvres or draw them completely to the side.
Panel Blinds Offer an alternative for large openings and room dividers. Panels of fabric, between 300mm and 1700 wide, are fixed in a series of channels top and bottom. They operate by simply sliding across the opening.
Venetian Blinds Slats of wood or coloured aluminum are arranged horizontally and rotated to open or close. The slats can also be raised to the top of the window. Different slat widths are available.
Aluminium blinds have the widest variety of shades, colours and patterns and include perforated slats which permit some light through even when closed. They can also be used in the PVC window systems that avoids the need to drill into the frame.
Wooden Venetians are suitable for most applications but care must be taken to avoid excessive damp areas or very strong direct sunlight. Different colours and timber shades are available an a variety of slat widths. Coloured tape ladders (slat supports) are availble in some ranges.
Roman blinds are made from curtain fabric and are ideal as part of a co-ordinated design scheme in living areas. The fabric forms a series of folds as it is raised to the top of the window.
Prefer not to have holes drilled into your nice new conservatory? Then no drill systems are available which avoid the need to drill into into PVC windows and doors. Mainly used with pleated and venetian blinds but also available for roller blinds.
Shutters are louvered panels hinged to the inside of windows and doors. Originating from the plantation estates in the West Indies and America, they kept out the intense heat and light. Outstanding natural beauty combined with modern designs and colours create the perfect compliment to your home.
